Expert shares the ‘mighty’ health benefits of kiwi

Kiwi, a tropical fruit renowned for its tangy and delightful flavor, is not only a tasty treat but also brimming with numerous health advantages. Nutritionist Lovneet Batra recently shared the virtues of incorporating kiwis into one’s diet on Instagram, emphasizing the potent health benefits packed within this small yet mighty tropical fruit.

Acknowledging the vibrant color and refreshing taste of kiwi, Batra highlighted its impressive health benefits. Dr. Rachna Agarwal, a nutritionist, concurred, describing kiwi as one of the most nutritious fruits with the potential to enhance various aspects of health. Regular consumption of kiwi was touted to improve skin quality, reduce body fat, enhance vision, and boost immunity due to its rich vitamin and mineral content.

Dr. Agarwal further emphasized that kiwi, being rich in potassium, aids in regulating blood pressure and contributes to maintaining healthy hemoglobin levels, thanks to its high folate content. The fruit’s antioxidant and vitamin K content were noted for their role in regulating blood clotting and aiding calcium absorption.

However, Dr. Agarwal cautioned against consuming heated kiwi, as this could result in a loss of nutrients, particularly vitamin C. She recommended enjoying the fruit fresh to maximize its nutritional benefits.

Additional benefits highlighted by Lovneet Batra include:

  1. **Digestive Health Boost:** Kiwi contains the proteolytic enzyme actinidin, which aids in protein digestion, facilitating smooth traffic through the digestive system, similar to papain in papaya or bromelain in pineapple.

  1. **Natural Sleeping Aid:** Kiwi is a source of serotonin, promoting better sleep. It may improve sleep onset, reduce waking time after onset, and provide relief from sleep disturbances. The peel of kiwi is considered a potent ingredient for natural sleeping aids.
  2. **Supports Pregnant Women’s Health:** Kiwi’s richness in folate (vitamin B6) is beneficial for pregnant women, aiding in fetal development and promoting overall health. It is also deemed beneficial for growing children.

  1. **Bone Health:** Folate, magnesium, vitamin E, and vitamin K in kiwi contribute to bone health, supporting bone formation and potentially building bone mass through autotrophic activity.

Incorporating kiwi into one’s diet emerges as a flavorful and nutritionally dense choice, offering a range of health benefits for overall well-being.
